A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
